whats your 2026 plan - ben wright

At this time of year, it’s easy to put things on hold. You’ve had a massive 12 months, and the temptation is to just get to the end in one piece. I’ve been there.

But I also know that this is one of the best times to take a quiet moment and ask yourself a bigger question:

What do I actually want financially from 2026?

Not just revenue targets or ticking compliance boxes — but the real stuff. Cashflow certainty. More time. A business that’s ready to grow, change hands, or finally take a step back.

Over the years, I’ve seen what happens when business owners don’t make time for this reflection — and I’ve made those mistakes myself. But when we do make space to think strategically, that’s when real progress happens.

So I’ve pulled together a few practical prompts to help you step back and start thinking bigger about what’s next.

1. Reflect on What Worked (and What Didn’t)

2025 probably had its share of wins and wake-up calls. Start by asking:

  • Did I hit my financial targets?
  • Where was the money leaking?
  • What gave me energy this year — and what drained it?

You don’t need a perfect answer. But you do need to be honest.

2. Get Clear on Your 2026 Financial Priorities

Think about what financial peace of mind looks like to you next year:

  • Consistent cashflow?
  • More time off — not less?
  • Preparing your business for sale?
  • Setting up a SMSF?
  • Finally, understanding what your numbers are really saying?

It doesn’t need to be “everything”. It just needs to be clear.

3. Plan Beyond Survival

So many businesses operate reactively — putting out fires, chasing BAS, sorting payroll. That’s survival. But real growth means stepping back and asking:

  • What does success really look like for me?
  • Am I building towards a legacy, or just getting through each quarter?

If you’re ready to grow — we’ll help you map it out.

4. Ask the Big Questions (Even If They’re Uncomfortable)

Want to:

  • Grow strategically in 2026?
  • Begin succession planning?
  • Sell up and do something else?

Then now, is the time to talk about it. These decisions take time — emotionally, financially and logistically.

You don’t need to know how. You just need to be ready to start the conversation.

5. Book in Time With Someone Who Gets It

You don’t need to figure this out on your own. Whether you want to grow, consolidate, simplify or exit — the first step is sitting down with someone who can translate your gut instinct into a plan.

At MBC, we’re more than just accountants. We’re here for the full financial picture — the plans, pivots, projections and possibilities.
